Vikings’ 0-2 start is different and same as last season

The Vikings started last season 0-2 and looked really bad while doing it, averaging 13 points. This season, they are 0–2 again, losing the game by three points in overtime and one point.

So, is there any difference at the start of 0-2? It depends on whom you ask.

“We go back and look at the two games we lost and compare them to last year, if you want to, because it’s different,” Dalvin Cook said Wednesday as the Vikings raced back. “You see the patience in the teams and you see that it is different. … you can see the difference in what’s happening and how things are happening. We are a confident group.”

Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells once said, “You are what your record says you are.” On Wednesday, Vikings co-defensive coordinator Andre Patterson offered his own version of that quote.

Patterson said it didn’t matter that the two losses had been close. The Vikings fell 27-24 in Week 1 in Cincinnati, when Cook lost a fumble in late overtime to Bengal’s 39. They lost 34-33 to Arizona last Sunday when Greg Joseph missed a 37-yard field goal in the final game.

“0-2 is 0-2,” Patterson said. “That’s us. Some people say, ‘You’re a fumble and a missed kick is 2-0 away,’ right? But we’re 0-2. That’s us. You have to live with it, you have to take it. Have to accept, and you move on and move on to the next. But you can’t have everyone, maybe, should, should.”

Next Sunday for the Vikings is the home opener against Seattle. After no tickets were sold for any games last season due to the coronavirus pandemic, this will be the first regular-season game against Chicago at US Bank Stadium with fans since December 29, 2019.

“At this stage, it’s time to get some wins,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said.

The Vikings are clearly hoping that a similarity between last year and this season doesn’t end there. Minnesota started 2020 0-3 and finished 7-9.

For now, the Vikings are set to start 0-2, the 14th in team history. In the first 13 such seasons, they made the playoffs only once, going 10–6 in 2008 and winning NFC North.

“You see all kinds of things,” Patterson said. “Teams that are 0-2 have a percentage like this to make the playoffs. Come on. Let’s be real. You have 15 games to go, man. You have to go to play. … Bottom line .

The Vikings play their next three games at home, with Cleveland on October 3 and Detroit on October 10, at US Bank Stadium after the Seahawks. Sorry Cook if that’s looking a little ahead.

“We could go on a tear for three straight weeks,” he said.

There is reason to believe that if the Vikings can put together the entire game it might. The defense has had its share of ups and downs, but the offense seems to be finding its groove.

Cook, who was out of practice on Wednesday after injuring his ankle in Arizona but is expected to play on Sunday, is fourth in the NFL with 192 yards to spare. Kirk Cousins, who has thrown 595 yards and five touchdowns, is ranked by Pro Football Focus as the NFL’s fourth-best quarterback.

“He’s done a good job of getting the ball in the right place,” Zimmer said of Cousin. “His leadership this year has been much better, the way he has gone about his business and not only for himself, but for being around people.”

Cousins previously dismissed talk of being a better leader, saying that he “has been one man all the way.” But then he added that being in his fourth Vikings season he has “a little more ability to understand and understand how this organization works.”

One thing is for sure: Cousins is off to a much better start than last season when he threw four interceptions in the first two games and 10 interceptions by the Vikings were 1-5.

So what’s the comparison that starts in 2020 and 2021 between Cousin Vikings’ 0-2?

“We believe in our locker rooms and the group we have and what we’re doing, but results are all that matters, and that’s what we measure,” he said. “So we understand in this league, winning and losing is really how you are measured. So we have to be able to win.”
