Vikings sign QB Sean Manion to 53-man roster, move RB Amir Abdullah to team practice

The Vikings on Tuesday dropped quarterback Sean Manion from the practice squad on the 53-man roster, and he will continue to serve as Kirk Cousins’ backup.

To make a place on the roster for Manion, the Vikings overtook Amir Abdullah, but then signed him into the practice squad. He is expected to join the active roster for Sunday’s game against Seattle at US Bank Stadium.

The move was expected on Manion as he used his two allowed upgrades from the practice team for the season in the first two games. Manion, the backup quarterback for Minnesota the previous two seasons, was re-signed to the practice squad on September 2 after being released by Seattle. A source said that when Manion was signed on September 11 he was there for backup and would be signed to the 53-man roster after using up his two upgrades.

The Vikings now have three quarterbacks on their active roster. The third rookie is Kellen Mondt, who was inactive for the first two matches.

After playing the last three seasons for the Vikings, Abdullah started this season in the practice team and joined the active roster for the first game in Cincinnati. Abdullah was signed to the 53-man roster last Saturday, and played in the second game in Arizona.

Abdullah, as a vested veteran, did not go through a waiver, so the Vikings could return him to the practice squad immediately. This season he is still allowed an upgrade from the practice squad, and is expected to be used against the Seahawks.

Abdullah is expected to serve as the third running back for the Vikings for the third consecutive game. With Ken Nwangwu in injured reserve, the only running backs on the active roster now are Dalvin Cook, the starter and Alexander Mattison.
