The Spanish island of La Palma registered a dozen small earthquakes on Saturday as its volcanoes continued to erupt.
The Department of Homeland Security reported the level of activity, such as registered volcanic eruptions, in the early days of the eruption.
According to the Canary Islands Volcano Institute, a small emission point was opened in the volcanic cone on Saturday.
On Friday, lava flowed from a new volcanic eruption, which the Canaris Volcano Institute described as a new “epicenter of an eruption.”
Miguel Angel, director of the Pavolka Response Committee, told a news conference Friday in Mercuinde that the volcano was experiencing “intense activity.” But he also put the explosion in the context of the wider island.
“Less than one percent of the island is affected by volcanoes. The rest are living normal lives, ”he said.
Authorities on Saturday advised people in some parts of La Palma to limit time outside.
However, emergency services picked up the permanent home order that was enforced in areas near the volcano, in the areas of Los Llanos de Ariden, El Paso and Tajcourt, which was affected by poor air quality.
“In order to improve air quality measurement in the area, lockdowns will be lifted in Tajcourt, El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridan,” the services said in a statement.
They advised people to avoid spending “long hours” outside and said that vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, should stay indoors.
Cumbre Vieja volcano began its eruption on 19 September and destroyed more than 800 buildings. About 1,000,000 people have been displaced from their homes on the island, which has a population of about 3,000 and is an archipelago in the Atlantic Canary Islands.
