More than 50 Cuban volleyball players have signed for next season with clubs in 14 countries under the auspices of the island’s federation, although the number could increase, according to a senior manager of the sport.
“To date, we have approved a total of 51 contracts at the Indian level, 21 for women and 30 for men,” said the Cuban Volleyball Federation methodologist in dialogue with Radio Havana Cuba (www.radiohc.cu). FCV), Osvaldo Martinez.
With more than a month to go until signings are completed in the first phase, on October 15, the figure is close to the highest for a season (2022) in which 56 players have signed with clubs in other countries, including two coaches.
“The pool of signed players of both sexes should gradually increase as it has grown in recent years,” said Martnez, specifying that of the 51 players signed, 36 are registered with the national teams.
He stressed that one of FCV’s main goals is to recruit players in the world’s major leagues, but warned that a ‘staged’ development would have to be achieved for this.
Although the greatest pages of glory in Cuban volleyball have been written by women, with three Olympic and world titles at the Morenas del Caribe Spectacular, men dominate the contracts.
“In the male field, we managed to use several players in the most important leagues: for example, Italy, France, Turkey… Many have shown excellent performances in recent years, which shows that there is growth.”There is potential for our players in those leagues,” he added.
Since the adoption of a new policy for the sport (2013), volleyball has been at the forefront of transfers. Javier Jiménez (Paok from Greece in 2014) was the first Cuban athlete to be signed, and since 2017, the number of signings has consistently exceeded twenty.
Several figures have excelled in leagues in America and Europe, some with notable prominence at their clubs, such as Miguel Angel López (Sada Cruzeiro), Jess Herrera (Perugia), and Marlon Yant (Lube Civitanova).
For the coming season, most members of the national team have renewed their contracts, while several youth players have been promoted to other leagues and will make their debuts in China, Germany, and Austria this year.
“This year, for the first time, we have included two players in the Italian league, Dezirett Madam and Ailama Cesé,” confirmed the federation, expressing the hope that they “will be the first in a group that can gradually move up to the same leagues.”
He stressed that the women’s team tried to integrate players into important teams in Europe, referring to the agreement with Russian club Uralochka, led by Nikolai Karpol, who “supported us in the development of our players”.
“The most important thing (for FCV) is not the number of contracts, but the quality and the opportunity for growth based on the interests of our teams in order to reach the usual top level of the past few years.” “We are paving the way to get there again “, locksmith.
