Washington Democratic congressional candidate Rebecca Parson has a bold idea for getting Congress to pass a housing law: Break a million people into vacant homes.
Parson, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, is running to represent Washington’s sixth congressional district. In a video ad, she explained what she and her followers might do if she wins.
“Imagine I proposed a Housing for All bill in Congress, then imagine that you, me, and millions of our friends took action and took over vacant homes across the country. They couldn’t ignore us, Parson says in the ad.
“No one has ever done anything like this,” Parson continues. “So it’s going to work.”
Fox News contacted Parson’s campaign for details of the plan, but did not immediately respond.
On the surface, the tactic appears to be trespassing, a misdemeanor in Washington, although state law states that it is a defense if property is abandoned.
Occupying buildings is nothing new for Parsons. In 2020, she was a spokeswoman for the Tacoma Housing Now group, which organized a group of homeless people in 16 rooms at a motel in Fife, Washington. The group paid for the rooms for a night, then demanded that the city and state government pay because people refused to leave, according to local King 5.
The people finally left after six days when the police showed up and ordered them to leave.
Parsons, who she says has been homeless herself, is unusual in her situation, even on the minimum wage. While people in the front left of the Democratic Party often favor the $15 minimum wage, Parsons would prefer to double that.
“Minimum wage should not be $7.25. It should not be $15. It should be $30,” she tweeted, adding that “housing, food, health care, basic necessities for an adult in every county in the US to be afforded There is a bare minimum for .
Parson had earlier run for Congress in 2020 and lost in the primary.
