The 49ers’ offense has struggled over the past five quarters to keep the ball in the end zone.
But with a bang on Sunday morning in Chicago, Deebo Samuel led his team to the game’s doorstep.
On third and 20 during the Niners’ first possession in the second half, Samuel took a screen from the 49ers’ 16-yard line to the Bears’ 1. Or, more accurately, he took it from the Niners’ 11-yard. Line, where he caught a pass from Jimmy Garoppolo.
Samuel tumbled down the left sideline, perhaps proving that the 49ers needed to complete their comeback against the Bears and end their losing streak in four games.

Samuel’s catch-and-run play was initially called a touchdown, but after review, officials ruled that Bears cornerback DeAndre Houston-Carson had pushed the Niners receiver out of bounds at the 1-yard-line.
After a false start penalty, it appeared that the Niners could not punch the ball into the end zone, but on the third down, Garoppolo took a clearly broken play and went for a touchdown to make the score 16–15. Ran around the left end. Joy Sly Tying missed the extra point, her second in as many weeks and her second missed kick of the game overall.
On the former possession of the Niners, before their back half, Samuel caught a bomb from Garoppolo to set up a sly field goal when time ran out in the second quarter.
Between two plays, Samuel totaled 133 receiving yards and placed the 49ers inside the Chicago 5-yard line twice.
