Attorney General Merrick Garland said Demontre Anton Hackworth purchased at least 92 guns from federally licensed firearms dealers, including 72 guns from a single dealer.

He said some of the guns were recovered from incidents in Texas, Maryland and Canada that included murder, felony assault and drug trafficking.

“Almost all guns were recovered in incidents within a year of purchase,” Garland said. “At least one of those guns was recovered by law enforcement seven days later, just a week after it was purchased.”

“Investigation indicates that a homicide near Fort Worth, Texas, was recovered 55 days after purchase,” said Chad Meacham, US attorney for the Northern District of Texas.

“Another was used during an attack near Dallas, only 78 days after purchase. Yet a third was left unloaded in a vehicle with a small child, exactly 42 days after purchase,” Meacham he said.

The Justice Department said the federally licensed firearms dealer who allegedly sold 72 guns to Hackworth later relinquished the license to sell.

Garland used the case to confirm President Joe Biden’s candidate to lead the Senate Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Steve Detelbach.

He also expressed support for Senate talks aimed at creating a bipartisan gun violence law.

He said, “In recent weeks, mass shooting after mass shooting has killed children in their classrooms, dear community members doing their grocery shopping and gathering worshippers at their church ,” They said. “So as our agents and prosecutors work to remove crime guns from our communities, we are committed to doing everything we can to support bipartisan gun safety talks taking place in Congress as we speak.”
