Police said the allegation marks the conclusion of the investigation.

The investigation began on June 25, when police received credible information that a newborn baby was buried in the yard of a residence on 13th Street in Watervliet, police said.

Police evidence technicians along with the State Police Forensic Identification Unit then searched the yard and retrieved several small bones from a shallow grave that appeared to have been there for a long time, police said.

Police said forensic analysis then determined that the remains belonged to an unborn child.

This was followed by a “detailed investigation” and resulted in the filing of charges against Sawyer, who was determined by police to be the child’s mother.

Sawyer was arrested on Tuesday, charged and later released to return to court.

Watervillet Police Chief Joseph L. “While the investigation is complete, the healing surrounding the death of this precious newborn will continue for life,” Centani said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the details about this child’s death may never be known, but the devastation caused by it to our entire community is undeniable. The Waterville Police Department will continue to work tirelessly to bring those responsible for such irresponsible acts to justice.
