What is Patriots Day in the USA?

Patriot Day is intended to honor the unity, resilience and spirit of solidarity of the American nation in the face of adversity.

More specifically, this day commemorates one of the most tragic and shocking events in the country’s history: the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11). Even though more than 20 years have passed, that fateful day is still anchored in the national consciousness, the wounds still remain.

Why is Patriots Day celebrated?

Patriots Day: What events are there in the USA?

During Patriots Day, various memorial ceremonies take place across the country, including readings of the victims’ names, such as at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City. At this point the names of all the people who lost their lives in the attacks will be read out. These moments of silence and respect are a way to keep alive the memory of those who died unjustly.

There are also exhibitions celebrating American patriotism, concerts, donations, church services and community service.

Additionally, Patriots’ Day is marked by the flag being flown at half-mast. This gesture is a symbol of grief and respect for the lives lost. It is also common for Americans to wear the blue and red memorial ribbon honoring the victims and heroes of 9/11.
