What the 49ers are saying after losing to the Cardinals

The 49ers saved some face from a comeback attempt, but for their 31-17 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday, they looked completely out of place on Arizona’s injury-prone team.

They are now again tied 3-5 for last place in the NFC West, four and a half games behind the Cardinals, who hold a one-on-one tiebreaker against them.

Here’s what head coach Kyle Shanahan, tight end George Kittel and the other 49ers had to say after the loss:

Kyle Shanhano

What the game says about the 49ers:

“That we didn’t play very well today. I was really disappointed. Thought we’d play really well. Had a good week of practice, I thought we’d improve from the week before, but obviously it’s that way Not done.

On defense:

“It looked like they were in second place and less than five after every first down, all these free yards on the screen, let go of the explosives… I don’t think they punt until the third quarter. And then the offense happens.” But, you have to come out and start those plays.”

On a possible letdown on not facing the undead:

“It’s something that I talked about aggressively last night, to help those people downplay it. I think it came down to … I just saw how we dealt with there and We didn’t stop the run and stop those screens – when you were giving away some explosive screens and all that free yards. No matter who the quarterback was playing, we made it super easy.”

On concerns about the direction of the team:

“It is unnecessary for me to make such a big statement on the entire direction of the franchise after that game. We didn’t play a very good game today. We have to play a lot better and our fans are disappointed. I’m disappointed too.”

On kicking an extra point:

“We talked about it at the start of the drive. I think there were eight and a half minutes left when we started the third quarter. We were down 24, so you talk about it at the start of the drive: If we score, we are going for two here. We thought it was too early to start playing that game.”

On his postgame message to the team:

“How disappointed I was. Obviously we have to play much better.”

Is he considering playing Trey Lance next week:

“Maybe not, but definitely not thinking about those things right now. Thinking about this game and the rest of the team.”

On being caught off-guard by bad play:

“So I’m extremely disappointed. I’m obviously wrong, but I was very surprised that we didn’t play well today. I thought we had a good week of practice. I thought our guys were on it in meetings all week , and I felt my energy before the game. We were very impressed with the way we played.”

On Norman’s punishment:

“It was very disappointing. I don’t care what happens. Whether the referees were right or wrong, you can’t give them a chance to be wrong. So it doesn’t matter to me whether he deserved it or not. It’s that You’ve got it, and it’s so easy to avoid them—you get away with the hell.”

How Garoppolo played:

“I thought Jimmy was fine. I thought the pick at the end and the last two plays were bad plays on that last drive when the game got out of hand.

Armstead on penalty:

“I looked at it like the referee who saw it originally, who didn’t call it a personal foul. He said he was corrected by another guy who thought he had a better angle. He thought he hit his helmet. I thought he hit her on the neck. That was the tough one.”

Deebo Samuel

on his calf:

“I was fine the whole game. If my calf didn’t fit I wouldn’t go there. We tested it and it was fine.”

George Kittel

On returning to the field:

“Playing football is fun. Losing is not fun. But it was good.”

On his point of view:

“To combat the disappointment, you know, another opportunity next week and I am excited about it. It sucks for about 24 hours. You have to move on from this. It’s a long season, we still have nine games left.”

On rebounding:

“At the end of the day, you’re playing football, your dream job. If you’re not motivated to come back next week and work twice as hard and fix a little stuff and watch a movie, talk, Whatever we do, watch it and get better at it, you are playing the wrong game. You are in the wrong profession.”

Eric Armstead

On defensive display:

“Our defense is based on not releasing explosives, so we didn’t do our job.”

Did the defense give up on not facing Kyler Murray:

“We knew all week that this could be a possibility. We can’t take our foot off the pedal for anything. We were 3-4 years old at the time so we are trying to win every match.”

On the Cardinals’ screen-heavy plan:

“They do that to Kyler as well, so it’s definitely a big part of their game plan, getting the ball over the perimeter quickly, you know. They have guys with great skills.”

“I think people lead in different ways. The way I’m trying to lead is showing up in adversity.”

nick bossa

On assessing the game:

“Didn’t play enough, didn’t turn over and turn the ball, and it’s a good team. So whenever you do that, it’s really hard to get back into it.”

On Colt McCoy:

He is an experienced player and he knows where to go with the ball. It’s not going to give you a lot of opportunities, but I think we’ve shot ourselves a lot in the foot and if we want to chase someone we have to stop the race.
