What the 49ers Are Saying After Losing to the Colts on National TV

The 49ers lost their fourth game in a row on Sunday night as the Colts came to the rain-drenched Levi’s Stadium and beat them 30-18.

The San Francisco secondary skipped four pass-interference penalties and was unable to stop the Colts’ Carson Wentz-to-Michael Pittman Jr. connection.

Jimmy Garoppolo led a three-play drive in the fourth quarter to reduce Indianapolis’ lead to two points and give hope to Niners fans sitting in the rain. But he threw interceptions on the next two drives to dash any hopes of a comeback.

The 49ers team aspiring to win the NFC West now sits at 2-4 and now has a week to look forward to. The next shot at ending the losing streak comes on Halloween, next Sunday in Chicago.

Here’s what coach Kyle Shanahan and his team had to say after recovering from the loss:

Kyle Shanhano

On the pass-interference penalty:

“It’s been a struggle all year, and today was the worst. It’s always hard, getting our footing there… We gave them a lot of explosive freebies, especially those two touchdown drives in the first half.”

On his challenge:

“It was a glitch by us. I didn’t see it at all…everyone was screaming there was a mess and stuff, and to throw it away, it’s so weird, but the headsets went all out and so do you Me sitting there (talking to the officers) I was like ‘I threw it because it was a rumble but I can’t catch anyone.’ They were supposed to give it back to me, they said it’s fine, let me take it back but the NFL called and said I had to live with it.

On roster change:

“I think we’ve changed personnel a lot every week in these four games, so I’m not going to do anything drastic right now. I’ll evaluate the tapes and stuff and hopefully we’ll get some more people back this week.” But we’ll see what gives us the best chance.

On his criticism:

“Yeah, you lose four games in a row and I’m the head coach of this team. I expect it and deserve it.”

If Jimmy Garoppolo starts quarterback in Chicago next week:

“I would guess so. Will watch the tapes and see if people are healthy. …I have a whole team to worry about. Right now I am not just thinking about the QB situation. We’ll evaluate everything, see who gives us the best chance to beat Chicago, and see what the options are. We had two quarterbacks who were hurting this week. Jimmy was able to come back and play. We’ll see if Tray can do that next week. Still not sure. But there is much to be cleared.”

Jimmy Garoppolo

Regarding defeat:

“It is tough, very tough, especially how the damage has been done. Tonight got off to a good start and we didn’t maintain it throughout the game. We have to get back on the right track against Chicago.”

On the weather:

“I wore gloves for the first time. It worked really well. I thought I could still spin it pretty well. In the beginning, there was very little (rain) and it gained more and more momentum. It got tough with the footing but we played in stuff like that, so it was nothing crazy.”

What went wrong:

“I’m not quite sure. I have to watch the movie. The weather played a bit of a role, it picked up there. We just didn’t execute and there were a lot of mistakes on each other. One man will make a mistake here, one there. You’re not like that.” We can go back to the drawing board and not make many mistakes like this back to back.”

On his second intercept:

“That one, I didn’t get over it, didn’t finish the throw, so it went off. All night, that weather is tough to play with, the mental toughness you have to have, and the frustration when things go wrong like this.” We have got to live together. We have drama makers. We have good coaches. We have to live together.”

on his calf:

“It stayed, I would say. Definitely felt it sometimes. It’s what it is. We’re all guys out there, we’re playing with something. … I feel it, but It’s not interrupting me.”

On any nonsense from the pre-49er DeForest Buckner:

“DeFo was pretty close throughout that game. We were too, but nothing extraordinary.”

Why crime made so many mistakes:

“I don’t know. I don’t have a specific thing. Whatever the drama is called, we have to execute it. It’s about putting in more time, more effort, longer stays, more hours. It’s like this Time is small things.

“The NFL is a crazy thing. One week, you’re at the top. Week one, you’re at the bottom. Every team has its ups and downs. We’re at the bottom right now. But we can fight back.”

Rookie Jaylon Moore starts with a left tackle:

“He held his own, being his first start. He came in with the right mindset, was off and ready to roll. He played really well. The highlights of the game were: Elijah had 100 Well, Dibo played really well.”

Fred Warner

2-4 On start:

“You can go about it a lot of ways. The bottom line is we’re not playing well enough. I can go down the line and it’s every single person. There are some things I have to do better. All of this is like this Have to look at it. If you think you’re working hard and doing enough, you’ve got to do more. … We’ll have to figure it out. We don’t have a choice.”

On pi call:

“I don’t know if there’s a clear answer to this. We’re going to have to repeat it more in practice or get more rep on this. … It’s clearly an area we have to get better at. Carson, that’s it The place where he was receiving his yards from defensive pass interference.

On mindset:

“The mindset whether they get a PI or an explosive play, you have to stand up. We have to play better in the red zone. We are giving very high walk-in scores. We have to do a ton better.”

On the locker room message:

“I had a message for people. I’ll leave it there. Just know that everyone has to do better and work harder.”

Deebo Samuel

What went wrong:

“It’s definitely still all the little things that we have to put off all week, just allow it to carry over to Sunday.”

On the weather:

“I think we did a good job of keeping the ball as dry as possible but it is very difficult to catch a ball wet as wide out. (area) was great. The big spikes didn’t have to wear off, so they worked well with it. ”
