What will happen to Gaza after the defeat of Hamas?

The Israeli government has pursued two goals since it declared war on the terrorist group Hamas on October 7, 2023, following the brutal attack launched by this organization on the same day against southern and central Israel. In order to achieve that mission, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were immediately sent into the Gaza Strip to implement the plans of the so-called Operation Steel Swords.

Israel’s first goal is public and is to exterminate and eliminate Hamas from Gaza once and for all. After achieving this goal, a new order will be established in Gaza, where the management system continues to cause disagreement between the governments of Israel and the United States (US).

Among the citizens of Israel, the idea is shared, not expressed by their government, that the second goal of this campaign is to make those who not only carry out the terrible attack pay the highest possible price, but also all they celebrate it. and recorded it and whose pictures they shared through social networks.

Israelis hope that those who committed and were involved in the atrocities that left more than 1,400 dead, more than 5,600 wounded, and more than 240 Israelis kidnapped will receive their punishment.

It is worth asking, then, whether Israel will succeed in achieving these goals.

The most realistic answer is that there is no doubt that this will happen.

The IDF is the most powerful military force in the Middle East, and although it will take time, they will achieve the political goals set by the government because there is no turning back from their fulfillment.

The above alternative, that is, that the IDF stopped in the middle of this operation and returned to its barracks without accomplishing its mission, is unthinkable.

In addition to the will of the Israeli government and the superior capabilities of the IDF, the Israeli population has shown its determination that the end of this war will only happen when Hamas is completely and irrevocably defeated.

When that time comes, what might be the political results of Israel’s victory?

First, once the IDF controls the entire Gaza Strip, the Israeli government will not allow the reunification of the authority of the Palestinian leadership, represented by Mahmoud Abbas, in the West Bank and Gaza and remove the IDF from the Strip, although Biden prefers to keep them in this territory after their military victory.

Egypt and, to the surprise of many, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, not only with satisfaction but with the complicity of Israel, will play the role of caretakers of the said settlement of the territory of Gaza.

The two-state solution will be a distant and distant goal of the time because, after the attack by Hamas, this idea will be more difficult to accept in Israeli society, which will increase the marginalization of this concept and the previous one.

As a result of the above, the scars of this war will not disappear in years, if not in generations, and the world will witness a dangerous growth, prompted by many governments, also in the West, in the anti-Israel sentiment and, however, worse, anti-Semitic.

However, the major geopolitical changes taking place in the Middle East since 2020 will be difficult to reverse.

To begin with, the inertia set in motion by the Abrahamic Accords (AA), which normalized diplomatic relations between the State of Israel and many Arab countries, will continue.

This happens, in particular, with regard to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is the next country that, before the start of this war, is ready to formalize this step and to provide conditions for a close relationship, especially in security and defense. issues, which already exist between Riyadh and Jerusalem.

The historic reunion between Iran and Saudi Arabia, brought about by Beijing’s wise and effective diplomacy, will not change.

Finally, China, Russia, India, and the countries of the expanded BRICS+ group, which includes decisive players in the Middle East such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Iran, will continue to increase their influence in a region where the US is no longer the only and most decisive player.

Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) and its member countries will experience how their role in the Middle East will decrease even more, as has happened in recent decades, because they are not only interlocutors without credibility and without cause for the parties, but which, moreover, has become inappropriate and unproductive.
