for my money, Russian doll One of Netflix’s best original series ever: a fully formed jewel of a miniseries crafted around one of my favorite fiction tropes (time cycle rule) and anchored by an irresistible comeback performance from star/writer/co-creator Natasha Lyonne.
In six brief episodes, the show turned into a perfect science-fiction tale about how struggling it is to change your bad habits, and how freeing it can be to finally fall apart. From your own worst impulses. The last thing I wished, as the credits rolled, was a second season that could fuck it all. But a second season is equally approaching — on 4/20, appropriately enough.
Well, that was three years ago, and a lot has changed since then. (Cough.) And surprisingly, I find myself excited to see how the show continues the story in the future. I still think the first season will be hard to top—perhaps a show about someone stuck in an endlessly repetitive day will be a little different post-pandemic—but it looks like it’s time to get the creative team going. Given the best chance of getting it right. Optimism, what a concept!
