Q: It’s very frustrating to read that more than 150 San Jose police officers are refusing to be vaccinated against COVID-19. This is a very real dilemma, incredible for a well-educated police force. Despite the fact that these police officers are not vaccinated, they still have the right to stop and force drivers to interact with them in the immediate vicinity, thereby exposing these drivers to serious infection. Weekly negative tests may not be accurate.
What do police expect from drivers when they are stopped, simply at risk of infection? Instead of the motto “Protect and Protect”, it should now be “Risk and Expose”. These unvaccinated police officers should not be allowed to communicate with the public. Put them on duty, or better yet, work in hospitals with COVID-19.

Answer: For several months now we have been hearing that we should not make unvaccinated people angry, as this may reduce the likelihood of their being vaccinated. But it’s time to call it what it is, after all the data we’ve gathered to show that vaccination works and saves lives.
Refusing to vaccinate is selfish if there is no medical reason to prevent it. It’s not just about people and their rights. This also applies to people who have not been vaccinated and who can infect.
As of September 30, more than 100 officers have shown resistance or hesitancy to vaccinations, but San Jose employee unions have agreed on the possibility for those still refusing to vaccinate to take COVID-19 tests twice a week. But they will have to serve a 40-hour unpaid suspension to take advantage of this opportunity.
Q: I am one of those adult children who love building roads.
One thing I noticed about the nearly complete expansion of Highway 4 on Interstate 680 in Concord is that I have never lived in a more dangerous construction zone. I know Caltrans had very unique challenges. However, poorly drawn (and poorly erased) and constantly changing temporary lane markings pose a serious hazard.
In contrast, I have driven several times through the main construction area in Sacramento (Multimodal Corridor 50 Modernization and Rehabilitation Project). Temporary lane markings are so clear and safe! It appears that the latter was governed by a completely different set of rules than the former.

A: These temporary lane markings will be changed and may need to be changed several times because the project is still several years away. Highway 4 at 680 is much heavier and the lane configurations had to be changed several times, but comparing the lane markings in the two projects is helpful.
