Once again the gringos are very good at making fiction films,’ Mauricio Soto, a Morena politician and businessman, accused this Monday, after making sure that the DEA had no evidence that he allegedly received drugs money to fund AMLO’s campaign in 2006.
Despite admitting that he collaborated with López Obrador that year, Soto, who is now looking for a representative for Morena, explained that the ‘gringos’ – the DEA – united “this cinema, this novel” against president and him to damage his reputation :
“It bothers me a lot because it damages my image, I also have a political career, I was in the political campaign, yes, in 2006 and I coordinated with Nicolás on logistical issues,” he explained in an interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva.
In addition, he pointed out that the DEA has no material to prove the alleged financing of the Sinaloa Cartel in the AMLO campaign, which is why he called on the institution to present the alleged evidence: “There is nothing and that is what I have. said, if have something to show: videos, audio, documents, on and on.
Mauricio Soto emphasized that if he accepted or cooperated with the said financing, “I will be a protected witness and I have lived in Mexico City all my life, with such dangerous issues that I have to live in the States United.”
Who is Mauricio Soto Caballero?
Mauricio Soto Caballero is a businessman and now wants to become a representative of Morena. According to his statements, this year he registered for a candidate for federal deputy in the district of Iztapalapa.
However, he said, he hopes that the accusations against him will not affect “this decision because my political work is also valuable.”
The former official completed a degree in Public Accounting from the Ibero-American University in Mexico City, according to the National Registry of Professionals.
He has worked with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for almost 20 years, since he began his political career in 2002. Currently, he explained, he has a consultancy on tax issues, as well as sustainable projects in favor of the environment.
According to the journalist Anabel Hernández and a report by Tim Golden -published by the American media ProPublica-, the politician could have received millions of dollars from criminal groups to allegedly finance the presidential campaign of the president of Mexico.
Soto is also accused of collaborating with ‘Nico’, AMLO’s former driver, who, similarly, allegedly received money from drug smuggling for the same purpose. Because of this, he denied that he was a companion of Nicolás and accused that “this novel is very weak.”
