WHO warns about the arrival of another pandemic

The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned this Monday that the world is “not yet ready” to face the new pandemics that are coming, so he asked for a “pandemic agreement.”

This was clarified in his speech given at the World Government Summit, which was held this week in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), under the theme ‘Shaping the governments of the future’.

It is possible, or likely, that we will face another pandemic in our lifetime

“It is possible, or likely, that we will face another pandemic in our lifetime. We will not know how mild or severe it will be, but we will be prepared. Are we ready now? Not yet. So, the agreement of pandemics is fundamental for humanity”, he explained in his speech ‘An agreement of the future: why the Pandemic Agreement is important for Humanity’.

He added that “there is another disease pandemic”. He further emphasized that, if the pandemic “comes tomorrow, we will face many of the same problems we faced with covid-19.”

The so-called agreement on pandemics, which has not yet been completed, according to the definition of the director general of the WHO, is an “agreement for the future”, to “not expose the generations that follow us to the same suffering that we endure. ” He emphasized that “if the agreement had been put in place before the Covid-19 pandemic, we would not have lost.”

Pandemic agreement

Because of this, assured by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus that “now is the time for leaders at the highest level of government to deliver the agreement on pandemics to the World Health Assembly in 15 weeks.”

“The pandemic agreement will not give the WHO any power to any State or to any individual,” he insisted, in the face of accusations from some sectors that see this agreement as a potential threat against the integrity of nations.

According to the Organization, the experience lived in 2020 and the following years left many lessons for the People. “As a generation that lived through Covid-19, we have a collective responsibility to protect future generations from the suffering we endured,” he said. In addition, he recalled how the pandemic “caused great losses” to communities, countries, companies and economies.

“These losses should not be in vain and should not be repeated,” he said, after expressing his wish as the world’s leading health leader: “May it be written in history that we have fulfilled that responsibility and made the world a much healthier place, safe. and fair.”

Thus, the WHO emphasized that the agreement on pandemics is a commitment to national security, because “pathogens do not care about the lines drawn by people on maps, nor the color of our politics, the size- on our economy or the strength of our armed forces.”

“We are one people, the same species, sharing the same DNA and the same planet. We have no future but a common future: common threats require a common response. That is why this agreement of pandemics are very important,” he emphasized in front of the world’s top leaders.
