One of the most anticipated tournaments is about to return in 2024 because the Leagues Cup, a tournament that pits Liga MX against MLS, has a new edition, with the surprise that Club América is not in the group stage.
In the 2023 edition, Rayados de Monterrey was the team that went the farthest when they reached the semifinals but lost to Nashville, so this new year it is expected that a Mexican will take the throne from Messi and his Inter Miami.
Why won’t America play on the group stage?
This Wednesday, January 31, officially revealed the 15 groups that will make up the Leagues Cup: 8 from the West and 7 from the East, each with 3 teams made up of 3 countries that will compete: Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
In both, we see 17 Liga MX clubs, except for América, and due to the regulation issue, they cannot play in the group stage, although be careful; it is not because they are not qualified.
As the current champion of Liga MX, América directly qualified for the round of 32, and they are joined by the Columbus Crew of the MLS, the current monarch. In the 2023 edition, the same thing happened to Pachuca and LAFC, who entered the direct elimination stage.
So, for now, none of them will play in the group stage, but when they have been eliminated from all the groups, América and Columbus will make their appearance, aiming to reach the title of the 2024 League Cup.
When does the League Cup 2024 start?
This edition of the tournament will officially start on July 26, 2024, ending on August 25, after one month of activities.
