Wimbledon, England ( Associated Press) – Latest from Wimbledon (all time local):
The second women’s semi-final match between Simona Halep and Elena Rybkina has begun on Center Court at Wimbledon.
Halep won the title at the All England Club in 2019. Rybakina has never been in such a big tournament.
The winner will play Ons Jabur in Saturday’s final.
Ons Jabur defeated Tatjana Maria 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 on center court at Wimbledon to reach her first Grand Slam final, also a first for Arab and African women.
The Tunisian major is the first Arab woman to reach the final and the first African woman to do so in the Open Era.
Third seed Jabur will face either 2019 Wimbledon champion Simona Halep or 17th seed Elena Rybakina in Saturday’s final.
In the deciding set, Jaboor twice broke his 34-year-old German rival – a first-time Grand Slam semifinalist – on his way to a 5–0 lead.
It was Maria’s 35th appearance in a major tournament, and the 103rd-placed player had never been past the third round.
Jabeur and Maria, 27, are good friends – “barbecue friends,” as Tunisians say.
The women’s semi-final match between Ons Jabur and Tatjana Maria has started on Center Court.
No player has been able to do this in any major tournament so far.
The winner will play either Simona Halep or Elena Rybakina in Saturday’s final.
At the end of the women’s semi-finals, there will be at least one Grand Slam final for the first time.
Ons Jabur and Tatjana Maria will play their first match on Center Court. This has never happened in any of the four major tennis tournaments.
Simona Halep will face Elena Rybakina in the second match. Halep won Wimbledon in 2019 and the French Open a year ago. Rybakina is playing in the All England Club for only the second time. She lost in the fourth round last year.
The women’s final will be played on Saturday.
The men’s semi-final is to be held on Friday. Novak Djokovic will face Cam Nori and Rafael Nadal will face Nick Kyrgios for a place in the final on Sunday.
