Wisconsin hires Ravens tight ends coach Bobby Engram as offensive coordinator

Wisconsin has hired Ravens tight ends coach Bobby Engram as its offensive coordinator, the school announced Saturday, leaving John Harbaugh with an opening on his offensive coaching staff.

Engram, who’d coached in Baltimore since 2014, had been connected to the Badgers’ opening for several weeks. Engram replaces Joe Rudolph, who left the Badgers’ staff this offseason for a position on Virginia Tech’s staff. Head coach Paul Chryst called plays on offense last season for Wisconsin, which went 9-4.

Engram, 49, who starred at Penn State before playing 14 seasons in the NFL, has a son who plays for the Badgers. Cornerback Dean Engram, a Columbia native, just completed his third season in Madison.

After moving over from wide receivers coach before the 2019 season, Engram oversaw one of the Ravens’ most important and productive position groups. Mark Andrews, a Pro Bowl selection in 2019, was named an All-Pro this season after breaking several franchise receiving records. Fullback Patrick Ricard, who works with the tight ends, was a Pro Bowl selection in his three seasons under Engram. And Nick Boyle, when healthy, has been one of the NFL’s best blocking tight ends.

“Bobby Engram used to be my wide receivers coach down there and he moved to tight ends,” former Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. told Sports Illustrated in 2020. “What’s the best part of that team? The tight ends.”

With Mike Macdonald hired Thursday as the Ravens’ defensive coordinator, tight ends coach is the lone vacancy on the Ravens’ staff.
