With the Vikings unable to occupy the defensive line, Sheldon Richardson was preparing for a more important role.

Just as Sheldon Richardson has adapted well to becoming a reserve for the first time in his nine-year career, he will likely return to the starting lineup.

The question, however, is what position can he get the nod in when the Vikings play on Sunday in San Francisco?

When the Vikings signed Richardson 6’3 and 290 pounds for a second term last June, he was scheduled to be primarily a backup defensive player with three technicians. This is the role he played in the first nine games of the season after starting 118 of 121 games in his first eight seasons.

Then, when the Vikings were weak on the defensive, including the absence of main reserve Kenny Villequez, Richardson got about half of 34 defensive traps he played there in last year’s 34-31 win over Green Bay. And now the Vikings again have problems with protection.

Villequez is expected to return Sunday after spending time on the COVID-19 reserve list recently and missing two games. But starter Everson Griffen left the team after a mental breakdown on Wednesday.

However, the Vikings now need 3D technology. Starter Dalvin Tomlinson was placed on the COVID-19 roster on Tuesday and will not play against the 49ers.

“We’ll see,” Richardson said of his role on Sunday. “They gave me the opportunity to play plays, and I had to do them.”

Vikings defense coordinator and defense coach Andre Patterson has pledged to use Richardson in a variety of locations on Sunday.

“He’s going to play everywhere,” Patterson said. “He will play inside, he will play outside.”

The Vikings lined up on Sunday to be left without their four preferred defensive players. All-star defense team Daniel Hunter lost the season with a pectoral tear suffered from Dallas on October 31, and Michael Pearce’s nose kick will miss his seventh game in a row with a substitute injury with an elbow injury.

“The next person,” Richardson said. “I hate being so cliché, but it’s so simple. Next man, and don’t be the person you are replacing. Be yourself.”

Richardson, 30, was a regular in the NFL’s starting lineup. He has had this role in the New York Jets from 2013 to 2016, Seattle in 2017, Minnesota in 2018, and Cleveland for the past two years.

After the Vikings re-signed a one-year $ 3.6 million deal with Richardson, he was declared a reserve. He does not deny that there was a period of adaptation.

“I think I’ve adjusted pretty well,” he said. “Still adjusting, what am I talking about? … I have to earn the right to stay on the team. This is how I approach my daily work. ”

Richardson has played one of his best goals of the season in recent weeks. On November 7, he had a sack and a half in Baltimore, the only sacks he had this season. He had the highest rated professional football focus of any defender in Minnesota against the Packers, and his defender hit Aaron Rogers.

Richardson trained defensively all week. He looked good, so he immediately enjoyed the game.

“(Patterson) does what he does and gives me the opportunity to succeed and help the team win,” Richardson said.

One of Richardson’s specialties is rushing. He had eight sacks for the Jets in 2014 when he made his one and only Pro Bowl. and had 4 ½ when he started all 16 games using three techniques in 2018 for Vikings.

“Despite being a big man, he is athletic enough to get out of the game and not feel out of place,” Patterson said. “I thought he did a great job last Sunday. (Packers right tackle Billy Turner) had a hard time working with him at speed. This is a 300-pound guy who ran and climbed down on him again. ”

Now Patterson and the Vikings will have to decide what to do on Sunday with their depleted line of defense. The bow grip Armon Watts will replace Pierce again, and the defensive end of DJ Wonnum will start again for Hunter. After that, some uncertainty arises.

If Richardson doesn’t start with three moves, the other option is James Lynch. If Richardson doesn’t start defensively, Villequez will be challenged.
