Women’s Basketball Gears Up For Home Opener Monday Against California

Bowie State women’s basketball (3-2) will finally get a chance to play in front of a home crowd as the Bulldogs are set to host nationally ranked California (PA) (4-0) on Monday, Nov. 27,, at 5:30 p.m.m. inside the AC Jordan Arena. The non-conference tilt will be televised live on the Bulldog Sports Network.

Bowie State has two players averaging double figures in scoring,, led by Harris17.6 points per game. On defense, Katerra Myers is the team’s leading rebounder, posting 7.2 rebounds per outing.

The Series
Bowie State and Cal (PA) will meet for the fourth time in program history; BSU has yet to beat the Vulcans. The two teams met last season,, with California (PA) earning a 78-62 victory over Bowie State on Novembermber 18, 2022.

Last Whistle
Behind a 20-point bench performance, Bowie State defeated the Rams of Shepherd on the road in non-conference action on Tuesday, Nov. 21. The Bulldogs (3-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Harris, whoho has 16 points. Mia Smith added 11 points, eight rebounds,, and two steals,, while Jayla Irvin also scored 10 points and four steals off the bench.

Bowie State out-rebounded Shepherd 52-31 in Tuesday’s game, led by eight boards from Myers. The Bulldogs also grabbed 21 offensive rebounds and scored 12 second-chance points. BSU’s defense caused its share of mistakes in the contest, forcing 20 Ram turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Irvin’s four steals paveded the way for the Bulldogs.

The Opposite
Cal (PA) debuted at No. 20 in the latest Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s’s (WBCA) Top 25 Coaches’ Poll on Tuesday. The Vulcans opened the year with three straight wins, including a pair of wins against teams playing in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Cal opened the season with an 84-68 win over preseason Mountain East Conference (MEC) favorite and nationally-ranked West Virginia State on Nov. 11 before earning a 64-48 victory over Charleston (W.Va.) the next day. The Vulcans cruised to a 58-37 win over Davis & Elkins on Thursday.

California (PA), a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC),, averaged 72 points while holding a scoring margin of 16.7 against its opponents through four games this season. The team shot 45 percent from the field,, including 32 percent from the 3-point line and 55 percent from the charity stripe. The leading scorer for the Vulcans is Sierra Bermudez (14.8 ppg).

Next Up
The Bulldogs will stay at home on Tuesday, December 5, when they Goldey-Beacom at 5 p.m.m. in non-conference action. BSU is 3-1 against the Lightningand 2-0 at home, although during last season’s meeting, Bowie State fell 67-62 on the road.
