World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand: Germany in Pot 1 in World Cup draw

Groups will be drawn on Saturday for the 2023 Women’s World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand. Coach Martina Vos-Tecklenburg’s team is in Pot 1.

Eight groups, with four teams each, will be drawn in Auckland/New Zealand on Saturday (October 22, 2022) at 8.30am CEST (live on Germany is in Pot 1, each group will play one team from each pot. The seeding list for the 32 teams was based on the edition of the FIFA world rankings published last week, in which Germany is ranked third behind the United States and Sweden.

There are two exceptions to the classification of lottery pots:

  1. Australia and New Zealand are the hosts Raffle 1,
  2. three teams to be formed later playoffs are added independent of their world ranking Raffle 4,

Germany is avoiding the big favourites, but other pots also have challenging opponents ready, for example the Netherlands, Japan and Olympic champions Canada in pot 2 or Denmark in pot 3. The placeholders for the playoff winners are created in groups.

In a draw, only one team from each confederation can be drawn into each of the eight groups. The exception is UEFA, which has eleven teams – so a group can have a maximum of two European teams.

Star playoffs According to FIFA, “if practically possible” should be taken into account in principle. A maximum of two teams from a federation are allowed into the same group, even through to the playoffs.

For example, placeholders for a playoff tournament with Portugal cannot be used in a group consisting of two European teams.

Playoffs: Ten teams play for three places

Ten teams play in three play off-Tournament (02/17/2022 – 02/23/2022) There are three places left in the tournament. Tournaments are designed differently due to the number of participating countries.

  • Playoff A: Cameroon and Thailand are playing for a place in the final, with Portugal already seeded.
  • Playoff B: Senegal and Haiti play for a place in the final, with Chile already seeded.
  • Playoff C: The two semi-finalists are Taiwan – Paraguay and Papua New Guinea – Panama. The two winning teams compete in the final.

World Cup 2023: With 32 teams for the first time

The World Cup will be held from 20 July to 20 August 2023. The tournament is the first Women’s World Cup to be played with 32 teams. 64 matches will be played in ten stadiums in nine cities. The opening match will be held in Auckland/New Zealand, the final in Sydney/Australia.

Tournament Awards 2020: UEFA officials vote for Colombia

The FIFA Council awarded the 2020 tournament to Australia and New Zealand. At that time, all European and South American representatives voted in favor of a losing bid to Colombia, although reports from FIFA described it as weak.

The German Football Association (DFB) had no vote on the committee at that time.

DFB wants to host 2027 World Cup with Netherlands and Belgium

The 2027 World Cup, for which the DFB is applying along with the Netherlands and Belgium federations, will in the future be awarded by the Congress of 211 national associations and no longer by the FIFA Council. The date of the award is not yet known.
