World Nation News Guide: A look at Maine’s primary elections

PORTLAND, Maine ( Associated Press) – Maine voters are facing a lighter-than-usual primary election Tuesday in a year, with several high-stakes races on the ballot in November.

But there’s a contest in the Second Congressional District, where a former Republican congressman trying to return to his old seat must first fend off a challenge from a fellow party member. Former Representatives Bruce Poliquin and Liz Caruso, both Democratic Rep. Jared wants to challenge Golden in a closely watched Congressional race.

Democratic Governor Janet Mills faces former Republican Gov. Paul Lepage – both running unopposed in their primaries. Similarly, Democratic US Rep. Chelly Pingree and her rival, Republican Ed Thelander, do not face any competitors in their parties.

Elsewhere, a group funded by Democratic megadonor George Soros is funneling $300,000 into the district attorney race.

US House

Poliquin represented Maine’s second congressional district from 2015 to 2019, until lost to the current seat holder, Golden. Golden’s victory over Poliquin was the first congressional election in American history to be decided by rank-choice voting.

This year, Poliquin is hoping to win a rematch on Golden in one of the most-watched races of the 2022 midterm elections. But first, he must survive the challenge of Caruso, the first selector from small-town Cartank in Tuesday’s primary.

Poliquin is a businessman who also served as Maine’s state treasurer for two years before becoming a congressman. He said he decided to run again because of Washington’s agenda, which he described as “big government socialism” and runaway inflation.

“I came out of semi-retirement again because our country and our state are in deep trouble,” he said.

Caruso, in addition to being the top official in a city of about 80, is a former engineer and current Maine Guide, who said she is running for Congress to return government to the people.

“Rural Mentors are not looking for the wealthiest candidate. They are looking for the person who will best represent them,” Caruso said.

The Second District is a large, largely rural district that is politically mixed, often competitive and comprises much of the northern and western regions of the state. The district’s largest city is Lewiston, which is 35 miles (56 kilometers) from Portland and is the largest city in inland Maine with approximately 37,000 residents. The general election ballot will also feature an independent candidate, Tiffany Bond.

Governor

Democratic Governor Janet Mills and her opponent, former Republican Governor Paul Lepage, are both unopposed in their respective primaries, and are awaiting November’s election.

Mills has called for the state budget and handling of the pandemic to allow the state to recover – and to return the bulk of the $1.2 billion surplus to taxpayers in the form of an $850 inflation relief check.

LePage, seeking a third term, has criticized Mills’ heavy-handed executive decrees during the COVID-19 pandemic and a one-time budget “gimmick”.

It is seen as a tight race with a third candidate making his or her first bid for elected office. Down East physician Sam Hunkler is a freelancer who has a spending limit of $5,000.

District Attorney

The race for district attorney in Cumberland County was hit by outlandish cash tied to Democratic billionaire donor George Soros.

A Soros-backed Super PAC provided $300,000 to a political action committee running attack ads on Jacqueline Sartoris’s behalf against current Jonathan Sehrbeck. Both are running as Democrats, but Sartoris said he is the only “lifetime Democrat” in the race. Saherbeck, who had previously run independently, called the spending “outrageous”.

Together the candidates raised about $70,000 for the race. That’s also a huge sum to run for a prosecutor in Maine.
