Wyze’s new Cam Plus Lite plan raises questions about the future of free services

Wyze has come a long way from creating “to-good-to-be-true” home security solutions—some moments are more unfortunate than others—but the way forward for sustainability is to create great subscription services at affordable prices. . Additionally, the company is now introducing a new name-your-own-price subscription tier for Wyze Cam Plus.

Cam Plus Lite will bring 12-second video recording every 5 minutes with up to 14 days of cloud storage and will also bring down the identity of the person. As mentioned above, users decide how much they will pay. It might mean nothing, if they really wanted to, but Wyze would suggest certain donation tiers to users.

This plan will apply to the entire family of supported products including Wyze Cam v2 and v3, Pan v1 and v2, and Cam Outdoor – Video Doorbell owners will be able to use the Cam Plus Lite at a later date.

The new tier will not replace the free Basic plan, which includes snapshots every five minutes with motion, sound, smoke and carbon monoxide alerts. Wyze Cam Plus, which features several other detection triggers, Wyze WebView, and product discounts, still costs $2 per month per device, or $15 per year.

However, what will be changing for Basic plan users is the ability to save event recordings to the cloud. In an effort to reduce unnecessary notifications, Wyze will be required to trigger person tracing from February 15. As such, event recording will be reserved for Cam Plus and Cam Plus Lite customers only. However, there is no enrollment time limit nor are they obliged to sign up for free users to come to Cam Plus Lite.

On the other hand, those who prefer local storage will be pleased to know that Wyze has acquired an exFAT license that will allow users to install microSD cards larger than 32GB. Cam v3 owners already have this capability with the latest firmware update; The other cameras will have to wait on the next one. Plus, event playback is being made a lot easier with one-tap access to timestamps and buttons for 30-second skip and rewind – expect the latter in mid-February.

This is not the first time that the company has come up with a name-your-price model. In 2020, it asked owners for contributions to use its newborn person detection facility as it struggled to stay afloat during the pandemic.

Wyze says it will evaluate the Cash Flow Cam Plus Lite before officially determining what it plans to offer on future products. Of course, with the way things are going, we may also have to be prepared for the possibility of non-zero prices for all users someday.
