There are only a few hours left to board the train to Holguín, or in other words, to play the National Press Softball Tournament “Jorge Luis Valdés Rionda in memoriam” again.
“Since 2018, the national tournament has not been held. There are many reasons, first the pandemic, then the economic conditions that did not allow us to celebrate it before, but now we can achieve it,” said Annel Martínez, national president of the Press Softball League, exclusively for Cuba periodistas.
Last Friday the details were finalized by videoconference of the eight teams that will attend the event: Medios Nacionales, Vaqueros, Isla de la Juventud, Las Tunas, Camagüey, Holguín, Ciego de Ávila and Santi Spíritus, who thanked the authorities of the Party and the Government of Holguín for the support they provided for the holding of the largest open-air event of UPEC.
“The desire to see each other again on the field is great. Softball is not just a game, but a hobby that we choose to be brothers, to strengthen the emotional bond between the big family that we are , the members of UPEC, is. We enjoy every high school game we play, but I’m sure nothing can buy what we’ll experience in Holguín, one of the provinces that hosts this championship the most moment,” confessed Annel Martínez.
This year the event will be dedicated to the memory of Yurislenia Pardo Ortega, who was the president of UPEC in Camagüey and recently passed away.
“One of the most beautiful initiatives that we will experience in this edition is the tribute that will be made to the teammates of Camagüey, who have decided to play with the number 45, the same one that Yurislenia uses every time he supports his team,” said the president of the league.
In the 21st edition of the Press Softball Championship there will be a total of 120 softball players, who for the first time will be fully uniformed thanks to the efforts made by UPEC.
And if this is the first time, this year the most students from the Faculties of Communication will participate, a total of 12; And as a highlight, this is also the first time that a woman will play, the journalist Lilian Cid, who will represent her province in Las Tunas.
We will expand on these topics during the coverage of the event through all digital platforms of Cubaperiodistas.
Currently, the competing teams are preparing for the competition. The opponent to defeat? National Media, who has remained the champion for the last eight editions. Who will be the new champion?
