Yankees retire DJ LeMahieu and Chapman due to injuries

NEW YORK ( Associated Press) — New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu was pulled from the lineup for Tuesday night’s game at the last minute because of a sore left wrist, and Cuban closer Aroldis Chapman was placed on the disabled list with Achilles tendinitis in his left foot.

LeMahieu was scheduled to be first in the batting order and third base against the Baltimore Orioles, but New York announced he would not play with about 90 minutes left in the game.

The two-time batting champion has a .250 ERA with three home runs and a .704 OPS this season. He is 5-for-39 (.128) in his last 10 games.

Asked about LeMahieu’s struggles earlier Tuesday, manager Aaron Boone said he thought the player was “close” to ending his losing streak and didn’t mention the wrist as an issue.

Venezuelan Marwin González replaced LeMahieu at third base and Aaron Hicks was left as leadoff.

New York activated wide receiver Kyle Higashioka who was on the inactive list due to COVID-19.

Left fielder Joey Gallo and third baseman Josh Donaldson remained sidelined with the virus, although the former has tested negative and practiced Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.

Chapman underwent an MRI exam Monday that came back negative for a possible tear. Boone said Tuesday that Chapman has made progress in improving him but isn’t ready to play a game yet.

Donaldson was sidelined Monday because of the virus shortly before Major League Baseball suspended him one game for goading Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson by repeatedly calling him Jackie Robinson over the weekend.
