In the San Francisco Bay Area of the United States, they will offer you financial incentives if you decide to trade in your old car. This was announced by the Air Quality Management District through its official information channels. If you voluntarily surrender your 1998 or older vehicle, you will receive a check for $1,200.00 USD. It is an initiative in favor of the environment and benefits everyone involved.
Local authorities aim to reduce air pollution. Those old cars don’t have modern technology to control emissions. This idea will be realized through the vehicle buy back program related to the air district.
Its executive director, Sharon Landers, said the vehicle buyback program is necessary to anticipate the “retirement” of cars and trucks. “Older engines tend to be dirtier than modern ones for obvious reasons, and contribute negatively to air pollution,” the executive explained.
How do I know I am eligible for this program?
The first thing to consider is that your vehicle must be manufactured in 1998 or earlier. Similarly, it is necessary that it is currently operational.
Another important requirement is to have the car registered in the Bay Area for the past two years. Finally, vehicles that are within 60 days of an installed smog test are required to perform that test.
Those responsible for the program emphasize the need to remove these cars from the roads. In this way, carbon dioxide, a strong greenhouse gas that contributes negatively to climate change, will be reduced.
Vehicle Buy Back has had great results so far. Official figures show that more than 90,000 cars, vans, trucks and SUVs have been taken off the roads since 1996. Operation of 3,000 vehicles stopped in 2021 alone, equivalent to 91 tonnes of air pollution
