YouTube TV Cuts Fees After Loss of ESPN and Other Disney Channels in Failed Negotiations

Google’s YouTube TV has lost more than a dozen Disney-owned channels, including ABC and ESPN, after the two companies were unable to strike a deal during last-minute renewal negotiations.

On Friday, the two companies said in separate statements that negotiations had fallen through, and Disney-owned channels will be removed from YouTube TV’s streaming service starting December 18.

YouTube reported on its blog that it had negotiated “good faith” with Disney for several months, but “unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to reach an equitable agreement prior to the expiration of the existing agreement,” and that Disney channels are no longer available on a platform owned by Google.

YouTube TV subscribers will see their monthly fees drop $ 15 to $ 49.99, while Disney-owned content will remain off the platform due to failed negotiations.

“We know this is disappointing news for our customers, not what we wanted. We will continue negotiations with Disney to speak on your behalf in the hope of bringing their content back to YouTube TV, ”the company said.

“If Disney offers us fair terms, we will renew the contract with them,” added YouTube TV.

Disney said in a statement to Variety that YouTube negotiators “declined to enter into a fair deal with us based on market conditions.”

“We are committed to reaching a peer agreement with Google as soon as possible to minimize the inconvenience to YouTube viewers by rebuilding our networks. We hope that Google will join us in this effort, ”Disney told the publication.

The two firms warned subscribers earlier this week that negotiations to extend YouTube’s contract to broadcast Disney channels, which include National Geographic, Freeform, and the FX network, in addition to ESPN and ABC stations, could be disrupted.

The disagreement between the two companies revolved around money: YouTube TV claims Disney said it should receive higher compensation for Google-owned platform to host its channels.

“We ask Disney, like all of our partners, to treat YouTube TV like any other TV service provider, offering us the same rates that pay a similar size service across all Disney channels as long as we support them,” YouTube said TV set.

The fight with Disney is the latest confrontation over a career deal involving YouTube TV. Earlier in the fall, he had a similar dispute with NBCUniversal Comcast Corporation, and last week he settled a backlog with Roku that got YouTube TV removed from the Roku platform.
